The northern access road to the Thulamela Heritage Site in the far northernmost region of the Kruger National Park (KNP) was closed today for necessary road works.

The northern access road to the Thulamela Heritage Site in the far northernmost region of the Kruger National Park (KNP) was closed today for necessary road works.

“We had to do necessary maintenance on this short section of the loop road but we don’t believe that it will impact on visitors too much as there is another route they can use to access Thulamela,” said the KNP’s Head of Technical Services Department Mr. Blake Schraader.

Road works will only affect the two kilometre-long northern access loop road to the S64. The southern access loop road and the S64 gravel road itself will not be affected at all during the road works. The road works will continue until Thursday, August 28, 2008.

Thulamela is an Iron Age archaeological site dating back to the period AD 1200 - AD 1640 and is believed to be linked to the Great Zimbabwe ruins and other archaeological sites in the Southern Africa area.

Visitors to Thulamela are advised to use the Southern access road, and then turn left onto the S64. Regular tours of the site from Punda Maria Rest Camp will also not be affected by the maintenance.

Thulamela Archaeological Site is situated on a hill overlooking the Luvuvhu River Valley, about 50 kilometres north of Punda Maria Rest Camp.
