Media Release: Greening Camdeboo National Park’s new campsite
In an exciting new development, environmentally-concerned visitors can now contribute to greening the Camdeboo National Park by donating trees online.
Park Manager Peter Burdett explained that the area identified for the construction of the new campsite is adjacent to the Nqweba Dam and currently covered by Acacia thorn trees. These sweet-thorn trees, while indigenous, are deciduous and have a limited life span as they are considered as pioneer plants.
“We need 120 karee (Rhus lancea) trees to plant in the campsite area to ensure that visitors who use the facility will be comfortable in the shade,” said Burdett. Planting trees also contributes to improving the state of the environment through carbon sequestration, oxygen production and the provision of shelter and food for wildlife.
One 1.3-metre high karee tree costs R110, leading to a total R13 200 project cost. Each visitor or business who donates one or more trees will be issued with a certificate commemorating their contribution to the Camdeboo National Park.
After an extended initial delay due to environmental impact application administration matters, the construction of both the tented Bush camp, with four tents, and the campsite, with a proposed 12 caravan / tent sites is back on track, having been given the official go-ahead. It is expected that the Bush camp will open by the end of 2011, with the campsite to follow soon after.
The opening of these accommodation facilities will signal the first-ever such development in the Camdeboo National Park and present visitors to Graaff-Reinet with the ideal opportunity to relax in the scenic national park.
Donors can access the SANParks donation portal via the GivenGain website.
